5-Axis CNC Machining: When Tight Tolerances Demand More Than 3+2

Most precision parts are made on a 3-axis or 3+2 machine. For the majority of brackets, housings and fittings that is the right and most economical choice. But some geometries only behave when the tool can move along five axes at once.

Where 3+2 stops being enough

3+2 fixes the rotary axes and machines from a tilted plane. It is fast and accurate for flat faces at an angle. The moment a feature is a compound curve — a turbine blade, an impeller, a free-form medical contour — the tool needs to stay normal to the surface continuously. That is simultaneous 5-axis, not 3+2.

Fewer setups, tighter stacks

When to ask for 5-axis

Ask for it when a part has compound angles, deep cavities, or when you are paying for more than two setups on a 3-axis cell. We quote 5-axis when the setup reduction pays back the cycle time — and we will tell you when it does not.
