Specify function-critical features only

Mark the features whose variation affects function — bearing journals, sealing faces, bolt circle position — and let the rest run to general tolerance. This alone often removes a machining operation.

Process capability at volume

• Near-net forging or casting with finish-machining usually wins above a few thousand pieces a year.
• Dedicated fixtures convert tight tolerances from a skill into a repeatable setup.
• In-process gauging catches drift before a batch of scrap is made.
