Renewable Energy Hardware: Corrosion and Fatigue in Outdoor Service

Renewable Energy Hardware: Corrosion and Fatigue in Outdoor Service

For solar trackers, wind hardware and mounting structures, the load case is not the hard part — the environment is. Cyclic wind loading plus coastal or industrial atmosphere is what ends service life.

Fight corrosion first

  • Hot-dip galvanising or suitable marine coatings for exposed structural parts.
  • Stainless or duplex grades for fasteners, where mixed-metal contact is unavoidable.
  • Seal and drain designs so water does not sit in a joint.

Respect fatigue

Fatigue failures start at stress concentrators — sharp corners, thread roots, weld transitions. Generous radii and controlled surface finish at those points add years of life for very little cost.
